With the larger office, CallaDerm is able to offer new services to patients. These services include Xtrac Laser treatment for psoriasis and with the addition of two new surgery suites, Dr. Jami Reaves can offer Mohs surgery for skin cancer.

"I am excited to move CallaDerm to our permanent location and provide additional services to our patients," said Dr. Reaves. "Our new office is comfortable and spacious and still conveniently located in the Meadowview area of Kingsport."

CallaDerm Now Offers Laser Psoriasis Treatment

August 2013 - People in the Tri-Cities area who suffer from the itch and pain of plaque psoriasis can now find safe, effective treatment with laser therapy at the CallaDerm Center for Medical and Surgical Dermatology.

Xtrac Laser"Laser therapy provides real relief and offers many advantages over other psoriasis treatments," said CallaDerm's Dr. Jami Reaves. "There are few side effects and it can treat any area of the body."

CallaDerm will begin offering XTRAC laser therapy in September at the practice's Kingsport office. The treatment is covered by most insurance providers. XTRAC is typically performed in short, 10-15 minute sessions twice a week. Most patients see an improvement in their symptoms after three to four sessions, with significant results occurring after six to 10 sessions. Treatment regimens typically provide several months of relief from psoriasis.

Psoriasis is the most prevalent autoimmune disease in the United States and plaque psoriasis is the most common form, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. The Foundation sponsors Psoriasis Awareness Month each August to bring attention to the disease and advocate for better care for patients with psoriasis.

Free Skin Cancer Screenings on Melanoma Monday®

Skin Cancer ScreeningMay 2013 - CallaDerm Center for Medical and Surgical Dermatology will provide free skin cancer screenings to the public on Melanoma Monday®, May 6. Exams will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis, and no appointments are necessary.

Melanoma Monday® is an annual observance established by the American Academy of Dermatology to increase awareness of melanoma and other skin cancers and promote early detection through regular examinations.

"One in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer," said Jami Reaves, CallaDerm's lead doctor. "However, skin cancer is highly curable if caught early. This is why it is so important for people to get skin checks."

According to the National Cancer Institute, many counties in east Tennessee have a melanoma incidence that is well above the national average. Sullivan County has the fourth highest incidence rate of melanoma in Tennessee, and Hawkins County ranks tenth.

"Living in the mountains can increase your risk for skin cancer because ultraviolet radiation is stronger at high altitudes," said Reaves. "So it is especially important for people in our area to get regular skin exams and take steps to prevent skin cancer in the first place, like using a broad-spectrum sunscreen everyday and staying in the shade when the sun is brightest."
